The New England Aster (Symphyotrichum novae-angliae), also known as Aster de nueva inglaterra, stands out with its yellow center disks complimented by long, purple petals and lance-shaped leaves. At full maturity, its plant heads resemble stars, which is how it got its name “Aster”. Blooming later than many prairie native wildflowers, this perennial provides nectar for bees and butterflies into the fall, and is often seen growing alongside Goldenrod. This gold and purple flowers combination is very aesthetically appealing to many.

The New England Aster grows 3 to 6 feet tall and blooms from late summer until the fall frost (Aug-Oct). Hardy and easily grown from seed, it prefers cooler summer temperatures yet flourishes in a variety of soil types, given adequate drainage, growing primarily in the central and eastern United States (USDA zones 4-8 ). It’s possible to grow in clay or sandy soil, though it’s not preferable. Its perfect growing conditions would be full sun and rich, moist soil.

Due to their love of water, humid temperatures doesn’t cause this plant harm, but make sure this plant has good air circulation. Without enough air circulation and too much humidity, this species is susceptible to diseases like powdery mildew.

This species is deer and wildlife resistant, meaning that the risk of deer eating this plant are very low.
