Description
Virginia Wildrye (Elymus virginicus) is a medium-height, short-lived, cool-season perennial bunchgrass found throughout the central and eastern United States. It establishes quickly and thrives in moist, rich soils—typically in open woodlands and riparian areas—but can also tolerate full sun and drier conditions. Virginia Wildrye is a desirable choice for landscaping projects and is valued as a preferred food source for both livestock and wildlife.
This native grass reaches heights of 3 to 4 feet and blooms in June and July. While it offers numerous ecological and agricultural benefits, it’s important to note that when mature, its sharp awns can cause injury to grazing animals and pets.
