Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) is a widespread member of the aster family with showy yellow petals and a distinctive dark central disc. The contrasting colors of these daisy-like flowers makes them an eye-catching feature of any meadow or garden. Its pleasant, sweet smell is perfect for attracting American native pollinators, including butterflies and bees. The late season seeds attract birds and other wildlife to your yard! Perfect for home gardening, landscaping, and planting prairies!
Black-eyed Susan grows 1 to 3 feet tall and blooms from early summer to mid-autumn (June-Oct) in Zones 4-9. Highly resistant to deer, this biennial is able to grow, flower, and self-sow at the end of its two-year cycle with remarkable success. Black-eyed Susan is native to the lower 48 United States and much of Canada. Although it thrives in full sun and dry soil, it can also grow in partial sun and moist soil. Known for its drought and heat-resistant properties, be sure not to get it too wet! Drainage is key. Overall, it’s low maintenance and is a perfect starting point for those just starting out with native gardening and who don’t want to reseed every year.
Rudbeckia hirta can become invasive if it has access to surplus resources and no competition.
