Slender Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum tenuifolium), or Narrowleaf Mountain mint, is a member of the mint family Lamiaceae. It is a warm season native plant used to attract pollinators in revegetation projects.
It’s a popular perennial mint species that has a pleasant mint aroma and grows 2-3 feet tall with a spread of 3–4 feet wide. This variety is native to the central and eastern United States. It is adapted to hardiness zones 4-8. It is best known for its multi-branching habit of stalks with very narrow, slightly needle-like, silvery green leaves. Grows in colonies.
- It has small white flowers with faint purple spots. Blooms during the summer, from June – September
- Butterflies and bees are enticed by this plant’s abundant nectar and smell. An important addition to native pollinator gardens. Attracts and sustains many native bee species.
- It flourishes in a variety of conditions, preferring full to partial sun and dry to medium wet soil, but does occur naturally on open woodland borders. Natural habitat includes upland prairies and dry, rocky, open woods.
Since Pycnanthemum tenuifolium reproduces via a rhizomes (root systems underground), it can be considered aggressive. However, it’s easy to pull the clumps apart and replant in another area.
There are two other common varieties: Clustered Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum muticum) and Appalachian Mountain Mint (Pycnanthemum flexuosum). Both are native to the U.S..
