Description
Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii) is a perennial warm-season native prairie grass species that provides excellent erosion control. Overall, it’s a practical, ornamental grass that does well in almost anywhere in the U.S. It is adapted to hardiness zones 4-9. Prefers full sun. Many farmers and large property owners appreciate the utility and beauty of this plant.
Big Bluestem, also known as tall bluestem, bluejoint, turkeyfoot, and ‘Rountree’ prairie grass, will grow up to 8 feet tall at full maturity. Has a deep green color with a dark blue-green tint to the culm (stem) nodes during the summer months of growth. This variety is native to the central and eastern continental United States. Although it is drought tolerant and can tolerate poor soil, Big Bluestem grows best when given adequate fertility and regular water.
The plant’s seed head spikelets have a high yield potential. This leads to fast sowing and reproduction rates. It provides shelter and nourishment to small mammals, insects, and birds with its leafy base. It can handle heavy foot traffic, and wildlife like deer, birds, and small mammals instinctively use it as bedding and resting sites, protection from the sun’s heat, cover, nesting sites, food, and fawn concealment. Big Bluestem provides many benefits for wildlife and pollinators.
While it persists under grazing, the bluestem seeds can become aggressive. Its rhizomes (root systems) can spread the reach and depth of this plant quickly, so be careful in home gardens and areas where you don’t want it to outcompete other plants. Like all native prairie grasses, it spends most of its early-life energy developing root systems before focusing on its growth above ground (towards the sun).
Start sowing in late winter to late spring. January is the most popular month to sow it in. Bluestem seeds are hardy and prefer slightly wet soil for germination. Plant about 1/4″ to 1/2″ deep in soil and it will take about a month (3-4 weeks) to germinate. Plant will be ready to harvest by late summer to late fall, if wanted.
