“SEEDSAVER”

Fox sedge (member of the Carex Vulpinoidea family) is named after its bristly seed heads, which resemble a fox’s tail. With its mound-like shape, this perennial sedge provides ground cover and grazing for small mammals such as rabbits and attracts birds with the abundance of seeds that it produces.

Fox sedge grows 1 to 3 feet tall that has a blooming period (fruiting period, in this case) in midsummer (July-Aug). The golden seed heads and attractive tufts of this sedge makes it an ideal ornamental plant. These windflower seeds are especially useful in restoring or enhancing wetlands as it spreads quickly and easily in soggy habitats. Fox sedge is native to the lower 48 United States and Canada and thrives in moist and wet soil, preferring  partial to full sun conditions.
