Prairie Blazing Star (Liatris pycnostachya), also called the cat-tail gayfeather, is famous for its flamboyant 8-inch pale purple flower spikes, which bloom top to bottom. Used to beautify bouquets as well as home gardens, this perennial wildflower is popular with nectar feeding pollinators, such as butterflies and hummingbirds.

Prairie Blazing Star grows 3 to 5 feet tall, and blooms from midsummer to early autumn (July-Sept), although it has been known to bloom for longer.  It does very well in both dry and moist soils, unlike other members of the liatris family, and thrives in full sun conditions. It is located primarily in the Midwest of the United States, and can be found growing alongside Rattlesnake Master.
