Named after the famous redbird of the Midwest, the Cardinal flower (Lobelia cardinalis) are perennial wildflowers with bright red blossoms that cluster around a central stalk. This member of the bellflower family has a long, tubular shape that attracts hummingbirds and butterflies which serve as pollinators as they feed on the nectar. Its flower spikes bloom for several weeks each year.
The cardinal flower grows 3 to 6 feet tall and blooms between late spring and early autumn (May-Oct), when the nighttime temperatures increase. If not planted early enough, first year plants may only produce lance-shaped basal leaves. Both heat and cold tolerant, the cardinal flower is native to the lower 48 United States and eastern Canada and thrives in rich and wet soils, as well as full sun to partial shade conditions.
- Member of the bellflower and lobelia family.
- Pollinator favorite. Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees that love its nectar.
- Loves moisture, so the higher the humidity, the better. Perfect for rain gardens and near lakes, streambanks, swamps, and rivers.
- Blooming season lasts for about 6 weeks, though pollinators can pollinate it during the warmer months.
- Very hardy, easy to grow, and can self-sow in ideal growing conditions.
- Short lived perennial, meaning it dies after blooming, but its seeds and offshoots will continue to grow.
- Deer resistant. May attract snails and slugs but they prefer other plants like hostas.
Its genus, lobelia, is known for being poisonous to herbivores. It’s toxic towards humans, cats, and dogs if eaten in large quantities.
These flowers can handle a wide range of temperatures. However, protection from frost and below freezing temperatures helps them hibernate successfully. The mulch layer protects the plant and helps it grow healthy the following year.
