Shining Bluestar (Amsonia illustris), also known as Ozark Bluestar, is a native perennial of the dogbane family with clusters of star-shaped, light blue flowers. As a warm season perennial, it adds a wonderful pop of color into any landscape. As one of the first plants to flower in the spring (April to Jun), this variety shows off its color for months with early blooms and leaves that turn gold in autumn.

It is native to the central United States, being concentrated in the state of Missouri in particular. Also found in Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas. Best for hardiness Zones 5 – 9. It usually prefers sandy/rocky/clay soils like along gravel or around streams. This plant adapts well to most soil types but prefers moist soils along streams or near ponds making this species ideal for rain gardens and detention areas. Thrives in full to partial sun.

Shining Bluestar usually reaches 2-3 feet tall, but has been known to grow higher in optimal conditions and keeps a shrub-like form. Don’t worry about being gentle with it though — too optimal growing conditions can actually backfire and stems may grow weak and flop over. If this happens, cut the stalk down by half after it flowers. This will promote stronger stems and denser growth for future seasons.

It is deer and rabbit resistant because its sap is slightly toxic to herbivores who try to eat it. It also provides nectar and attracts pollinators like Swallowtail butterflies and bees.
