Upright Prairie Coneflower (Ratibida columnifera), also known as Mexican Hat, is a native perennial forb from the aster family distinguished by a central elongated flower disk surrounded by drooping yellow or red ray flowers.

• When crushed, its seeds have an anise-like aroma that attracts wildlife.
• This plant feeds a variety of birds and mammals, as well as livestock.
• It is drought tolerant with its deep taproot.
• It is easily established so long as it is not planted in flooded soil.

Upright Prairie Coneflower grows 2-3 feet tall and blooms during the summer months, producing seed heads that mature in September and October. It is native to most of the continental United States apart from the Pacific Northwest, and grows best in full sun conditions and medium to dry soil. Adapted to hardiness zones 3-9.
